1. Eat slowly and in a leisurely manner. Make the same food last for 20 minutes as this much time is required for the brain to send a ‘stop signal’ to the body.
2. Do not snack on biscuits, wafers and the like. Fresh fruits and vegetables are the best. No second helpings except for salads and vegetables.
3. Do not watch TV, or read books while eating.
4. Do not skip a meal. It makes us tired and doubly hungry for the next meal. Remember it is the extra calories which the body can’t use up that are converted to fats.
5. Avoid parties and going to restaurants. The food you eat there will be very rich and will nullify your dieting efforts. If you have to go, learn to say ‘no’ to heavy foods. Stick to your diet.
6. Avoid some foods like cakes, sweets, ghee, sweetened beverages and soft drinks, cream, fried foods, cookies, ice-creams, etc. These are dynamites of energy (fat). It is only after considerable study of substitution charts that you can include them without any effect on your body.
7. Ready made diet plans are available. Try to devise your own by using substitution tables. It will make eating more interesting.
8. Do not be ashamed of your dieting. Confiding in your close friends helps; they may even suggest something new and even help you in your reduction program.
9. Have an achievable goal. Reduction of 2kg/month is an achievable target. It also helps you to form new food habits.
10. Avoid crash dieting. It is harmful and is at the cost of the shine in your hair, the sparkle in your eyes and your general body health.
11. Always eat 4 meals even while dieting. Divide calories equally between these meals.
12. Be determined in achieving your goal and in maintaining your new weight. Reverting back to your old food habits will only take you back to your previous weight.
