Home remedies for bad breath

bad breathbad breathYou must have observed some persons who behave queerly while conversing with others.

They try to close their mouth with a hanky while talking, maintain a reasonable distance from the other person and are usually in a hurry to end the conversation.

This peculiarity is immediately obvious to you. Knowing them to be otherwise confident and self-assured, you are left wondering as to what they are trying to hide.

And then it dawns upon you that the reason for this abnormal behavior is bad breath.

But it is no laughing matter when you are the sufferer and face such an embarrassing situation of bad breath, also known in medical parlance as ‘halitosis’.

Temporary bad-breath can occur when one has savored delectable dishes interspersed with strong flavored foods like onion, garlic, or as a result of food particles getting trapped in the teeth cavities.

Other causes could be constipation and/or as a symptom pointing to other diseases. Read all about it in Bad Breath (Halitosis).
Here are some home based tips and remedies for bad breath:
*See to it that you are properly hydrated and eat fresh, fibre rich vegetables and foods to keep constipation at bay. If you suffer from indigestion then try some of these home remedies.
* Make a habit of chewing saunf (fennel seeds) after every meal. This not just freshens the breath but also aids digestion.
* Prepare a paste of sandalwood by rubbing it with water on a clean stone slab. Squeeze half a lemon in it. Use this mixture as a mouth wash. This will freshen the breath.
* Bitter neem with its antiseptic and antibacterial properties is ideal for cleaning teeth. So brush teeth with neem twigs and neem paste. It is good for the gums also.
* Eat a fragrant green cardamom (elaichi) after meals. It is an excellent mouth freshener.
* Use coriander (dhaniya) decoction as a mouth wash.
* Mix lemon juice with twice the quantity of rose water. Use this mixture to gargle as often as possible. This helps to get rid of bad breath.
* Gargle with a cold decoction of Aloevera mixed with honey in case of chronic bad breath.

These are all great suggestions to combat bad breath. I think I'll try some of them. I've tried a lot of things. I've also tried Therabreath, and it really did wonders for my breath. For bad breath, try taking vitamin C, which can help rid the body of mucous and toxins that can cause bad breath, and can also help clear up mouth and gum disease. and prevent bleeding gums. Fiber can help remove toxins from the colon that can result in bad breath. If you suspect poor digestion may be playing a part, try taking an acidophilus supplement to give your friendly internal bacteria a boost, or have some natural yogurt. Chlorophyll (in alfalfa, wheatgrass, barley juice, or any number of “green” concoctions) is very helpful in both cleansing the body of toxins and covering the effect of foods such as onions and garlic, and in available in powder and liquid form. Gargling with a solution of 10 drops of Calendula tincture diluted in four ounces of water can also help. Chewing on fennel seeds, anise seeds, or a clove can help freshen breath. Use a tongue scraper, or brush your teeth and tongue after every meal. Avoid using commercial mouthwashes containing alcohol, since even though they do kill the bacteria that causes bad breath, the bacteria soon return in greater numbers. Try a natural enzyme mouthwash. Drinking plenty of water and peppermint tea can both help flush your system of toxins and help you smell sweet. You can also add a pinch of anise, cinnamon, or caraway to hot water or mint tea for added effect.

Brushing your tongue is probably the single most effective thing you can do. (I personally chew sugar-free gum, but I know that’s bad.) In studies it has been shown that tongue brushing alone is a better guard against bad breath than brushing only the teeth.Flossing of course is so important. I am always flossing and it annoys lots of people, but my gums are healthy while I am not, go figure.Replace your toothbrush about every 2 months. If you could only see the bacteria on that thing, you’d replace it more often. I personally love my Sonicare and I replace the head about every 3 months and my hygienist loves me for it.

Bad breath can also come from a stomach ailment. Acid reflux or an ulcer? The odor may not even be coming from your mouth.... it might just be escaping there. Check with your doctor about a possible stomach issue. He may be able to help more than the dentist if you have exhausted all other options. Oh, it could also be periodontal (sp?) gum disease. I know that issue causes bad breath. Nice article

Meals usually come with parsley, and if you’re having garlic or onions for lunch, parsley is a great combatant for bad breath. Although, warning to all, it’s definitely an acquired taste. But it’s inexpensive and provided with most restaurant meals – and it’s readily available at grocery stores for home use. All you have to do is chew. Swallowing is completely optional.

Good oral hygiene and regular dental visits go a long way to contributing to fresh breath. However, underlying causes can contribute to the problem and are often difficult to treat, despite efforts to follow a healthy oral routine.
A good diet promotes healthy teeth and gums and avoiding sugary foods helps prevent decay. Excess sugar contributes to an unhealthy digestive system and overgrowth of intestinal yeast like Candida, which sometimes causes unpleasant breath.

Drink lots of water to stimulate the flow of saliva and keep your mouth moist (“morning breath” is the result of saliva production slowing as you sleep). You can also stimulate saliva by chewing sugarless gum or sucking on sugarless hard candy. Don’t smoke. If you want help kicking the habit, ask your doctor or dentist to recommend a smoking cessation program. Say “no thanks” to garlic, onions, and other foods with strong odors when you’re trying to make a good impression. Get regular dental exams. See your dentist at least twice a year to have your teeth checked and cleaned.
