Just because you had fun cutting and styling your dollsโ hair when you were a kid doesnโt necessarily mean youโre cut out to own and operate a high-end salon or spa retreat.
But if youโve long had your sights set on running a beauty business and you have a passion for the field, thereโs no reason you canโt take the steps to prepare for such a career in order to make your dreams of business ownership into a reality.
So if beauty is your bag, here are a few helpful guidelines to get you on track to reach your goals.
First and foremost, you need to understand that nothing in this world is free. You might think that the beauty industry is all about fun, but owning and operating a business can be a hair-raising experience (especially if you donโt know what youโre doing).
Itโs not like youโd apply for an IT job without the proper degree just because you use a home computer. If you want to do well in any field you need to become an expert.
And this means schooling and practice. In terms of the beauty industry in particular, there are two different types of schooling you should look into: beauty and business.
Although anybody can try to start a business, most rely on loans or investments of some sort to get their operation off the ground. If you donโt have knowledge, experience, or more likely both to back you up, youโre going to have a mighty hard time securing the funds you need to get your business going.
So you should start by taking beauty courses in the areas youโre interested in, from hairstyling to skin treatments to nails. If you want to do it right, you should actually obtain licensure and work in a salon or spa for a while to get the feel for how a successful business is run.
From there youโll almost certainly want to obtain a business degree. The truth is that the best business owners know their operation inside and out, from the ground up.
So starting out with only a cosmetology license or only a business degree is not going to serve you as well as having both in your pocket when you open your own business.
You donโt necessarily have to go to the best schools for top business degrees in order to run a beauty business; although it couldnโt hurt, it could be pretty pricey.
And frankly, youโll be surprised to find that you can learn just as much from the comfort of your home through some of the top online business degree programs (offered by accredited online schools).
So you donโt have to spend an arm and a leg to get the education youโll need to run your own beauty business.
However, you should plan for at least a bachelorโs degree in business and supplementary classes in the cosmetology field so that you understand how all the cogs in your machine work. From there the sky is the limit.
