Pregnancy Skin Care: Beauty Products to Use and Avoid

One of the best parts about being pregnant is all the attention you receive from your family. The worst part about this is the morning sickness, nausea, bloating and of course being bombarded by your elders with lots of do’s and don’ts. The hormonal changes that occur in your body during pregnancy bring about changes in almost every part of a woman’s body. This includes major changes in a woman’s skin and hair.

Majority pregnant women will experience numerous changes in their skin. Pregnancy is a time to take extra precautions and care for your skin. Here is your complete guide to beauty products you must avoid and those that are safe for your skin during pregnancy.

Beauty Products You Must Avoid During Pregnancy
1. Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA): Popularly known as Salicylic Acid, this ingredient in skin care products is unsafe for women who are conceiving, as it results in pregnancy complications. Mostly found in skin care products and anti aging creams, this ingredient belongs to the aspirin family and can greatly affect an unborn fetus. Research findings reveal that skin creams containing the product when used can lead to increased chances of miscarriages.

2. Retinol A: Present in most beauty products, this ingredient plays a crucial role in eliminating wrinkles and improving skin tone. However, several dermatologists suggest expectant moms to avoid beauty products containing Retinoids because they are just like vitamin A that can cause birth defects.

3. Acne Products: Due to increasing levels of estrogen levels, it is common for majority women to get acne breakouts during their first trimester. In order to have a blemish free skin you will tend to pick up beauty products that will help you get rid of acne. However, be careful to pick out the best products and avoid choosing products that contain salicylic acid or retinoids.

4. Luxury Bath Products: Although these beauty products have a wonderful fragrance, what most expectant mothers are unaware about is a harmful chemical known as methylisothiazoline present in these products. This chemical can cause extensive damage in the development of the fetus.

5. Skin Lightening Products: Darkening of skin is common during pregnancy and it is seen that most women use skin lightening creams to regain their original skin color. Chemicals like hydroquinone or glutathione used in skin lightening products can result in malformation of babies and additional darkening of skin. It is better to refrain from using beauty products containing these harmful ingredients.

Beauty Products You Can Safely Use

1. Sunscreens: Is pregnancy coming in the way of your regular visits to the beach? You can now hit the beach without any problem and don’t forget to put on the sunscreen before going out. But beware of certain chemicals like retinyl palmitate that could be present in your sunscreen. This chemical can lead to birth defects. Read the label before choosing sunscreens.

2.  Nail Polish: Studies have not shown any instances where nail polish is harmful during pregnancy. A study showed that pregnant beauticians employed in salons did not face any harmful effects when using this product. Certain nail polishes contain harmful chemicals like VOCs and formaldehyde, which are unsafe. It is better to select a product that does not contain these dangerous chemicals.

3.  Cosmetics: The kind of makeup you use during pregnancy can have a great impact on you and the baby. It is important to consider cosmetics marked non-comedogenic or nonacnegenic, which means they are free from oil and have lesser chances of clogging pores. Oil-free make up products are harmless and will not influence the health of your soon to be born child.

All expectant mothers must follow these guidelines and take good care of themselves, their skin and above all the baby inside.

The ache of acne (pimples)

Acne is often the bane of a pretty face. It is painful more emotionally than physically, for the scar that it leaves behind can last for a lifetime, adding to one’s miserable look & feeling. No doubt many expensive skin care clinics have mushroomed in ever nook & corner, offering to clear all the scars & blemishes on the face, but they are very expensive & charge exorbitant price for each sitting; not everyone can afford them. So why not try out this simple skin care regimen to minimize the damage caused by acne & as far as possible prevent its eruption.

Aspirin for acne-prone skin

Aspirin has been around for a long time and its health benefits are wide and varied. Aspirin , or acetylsalicylic acid is a salicylate drug, often used as an analgesic to relieve minor aches and pains , as an antipyretic to reduce fever , and as an anti-inflammatory medication. Aspirin's greatest benefit is reducing cardiovascular events including heart attacks and strokes. According to the American Heart Assoc. virtually all women are at risk of heart disease and doctors should more strongly consider prescribing a daily aspirin for their female patients. There is growing evidence to suggest regular aspirin use may reduce cancer and dementia as well. Investigators from the Women's Health Study have reported important new findings demonstrating that aspirin reduces the risk of a first stroke in women. When given to someone immediately after a heart attack, aspirin decreases death by 25%.
