The Importance of Healthy Teeth and Gums

It may be something that we haven't considered, but the health of our teeth not only affects how we look it also has a dramatic affect on our overall health. We all know that brushing our teeth leads to a happier smile, but there are many small changes we can make to our diets, cleaning regimes and general oral health that can set us up for a brighter future.

How Unhealthy Teeth Affects Your Body Gum disease is widely publicised throughout advertising and the media, and we all know the risks that large plaque build ups can have in our mouths. What is not as widely reported is the link between gum disease, plaque and heart disease. There is a lot of evidence that points to how our oral health affects the blood vessels; the plaque within our mouths can dislodge and cause a build-up of bacteria within our blood stream. This can lead directly to heart problems and strokes. Now that has to be a good reason to pick up our tooth brushes!

Along with serious complications, gum disease can also lead to a loss of teeth, tooth decay that will need attention and bleeding gums. Each of these things can have a direct link to our digestive system and will need to be looked at by a dentist, which less face it won't help our bank balances.
To maintain oral health, look at you diets. Alcohol, sugar, acidic foods and high fat foods can each cause tooth decay and should be cut down upon. If you have diabetes this is even more important as tooth loss is very common for sufferers.

How our teeth affect our smile Not only does having unhealthy teeth cause the problems listed above, it can also have a direct impact on our mental health and how we smile. If your teeth have been stained from years of coffee, red wine and cigarettes, you are less likely to want to show them off. We are bombarded with images in magazines of the A List stars and there perfectly white teeth, if ours don't look the same it can make us extremely self conscious.

The good news is that staining of the teeth can be removed through whitening tooth paste or over the counter whitening its, both of which are excellent for the gradual removal of marks. If you wish to look further at the options available for permanent teeth whitening or veneers then visit a cosmetic dentist. This will definitely give you the information you need and will give you a bit more confidence in your smile.

The Best Ways to Prevent Gum Disease The most effective way of preventing tooth decay and gum disease is a regime of brushing, flossing and visiting your dentist.

Start by looking at how you brush your teeth; you should be brushing for 2 minutes in the morning and 2 minutes in the evening. Brush in a circular motion, making sure that you are getting in between the teeth and behind them - you can get special brushes to do this.

Once you have finished brushing your teeth, you should floss in between the teeth to remove any debris that the brush couldn't reach. If you repeat this twice a day, you will be sure to see results in the colour of your teeth, you will have better breath and reduce your risk of gum disease.

Another important thing we all need to remember is to visit our dentist every 6 months. Now I know this isn't always easy when we are living such busy lives, but these visits are important for picking up on any issues before they become much harder to fix. If you are a nervous patient then let your dentist know beforehand, they will understand and be able to offer you advice and a gentler approach if work is needed.
