What Does it Take?

To begin cosmetology school, a high school diploma or a GED is required. That’s step one.
From there, you will need to shop around for the school that best fits your style and budget. They are not all the same – not by a long shot! So have some fun driving to the various schools and walking through the halls to make your own observations. Take a tour; be prepared with some questions so that you end up at the right place for you.

It’s also a great idea to grab a cup of coffee or join the cafeteria line for lunch while you’re on the campus of each school. This will give you the opportunity to spontaneously chat with some of the men and women who are enrolled in that particular program. Who could possibly inform you any better than them? Inquire about what they perceive the school’s strengths and weaknesses to be. Go right to the source!

You Can Do It!
Though requirements do vary from state to state, most have compulsory standards of 1,200 to 1,500 contact hours and schooling. During this time, you will learn all of the methods and practices of the skills mentioned above, as well as the theory and science behind these practices.

At the end of your schooling, you will have state requirements to fulfill. Again, each state is different, but both a written test and a practical-applications test will be the final steps before you are issued your State License.

Is Salon Ownership in Your Future?
Is owning your own salon your ultimate goal? Go for it. Pick a school that can also help you with the business management aspect of owning a business. No doubt, it will be a wise choice to gain some experience before you consider diving into business ownership, but it is a fantastic goal, and many of the schools provide counseling and guidance on how best to set yourself up for future business ownership.
Each and every school has trained professionals who are waiting to answer your questions. There are people on hand to guide your through financial aid, class selections, scheduling, and every aspect of becoming a paid professional cosmetologist. Now’s your time! Go for it, and good luck!
