Facial hair is something every woman has, for some it's very light and hardly noticeable while for others it's prominent. In some cases it's genetically inherited. If your mother or grandmother had a lot of hair on their bodies, chances are that you may have it too.
But for some, it's because their hormones go out of whack, especially for PCOS or PCOD sufferers.
Unwanted facial hair is something every girl/woman dreads and often searches for an easy, inexpensive way to remove it.
However there are some brave women like Balpreet Kaur who are comfortable with their facial hair and don't give a hoot to what their tormentors think.
Even though your facial hair was light and hardly unobtrusive when you were younger, once you are on the wrong side of thirties, hair begins to pop up in the most unlikeliest of places, your chin, nipples and abdomen.
This usually happens because there is a slight imbalance in the ratio of female (estrogen) to -male (androgen) hormones. It's a natural process of aging and there isn't pretty much you can do.

Of course, you can rely on cosmetic measures such as tweezing, threading or waxing too get rid of it.
You could also opt for laser treatment but it can cost you a fortune and in wrong hands it can even scar you for life. And though it seems like your hair growth has reduced drastically after several pricey sittings, after an year or two it does come back. So no point in wasting your hard-earned money on it.
There is also this prescription cream called Vaniqa, to slow down hair growth. You have to rub it into your skin twice a day and leave it on for 4 hours. It significantly reduces hair-growth, according to a study conducted, but the drawback is that once you stop using it the hair grows back.
Also it's not recommended for pregnant and nursing mothers and women who are trying to get pregnant. Besides the long-term effects of this cream are also not known.
Now my mother who's in her 60's has a few stray hairs on her chin. Hair on the chin can be removed either by threading or tweezing. Waxing is out of question as those strays grow haphazardly and you cannot whisk them off just like that.
My mother usually tweezes those hairs. It does require some of your time, good lighting, a mirror and of course the privacy of your home.
It can be frustrating when you are travelling or when you have to stay at a friend or relative's place. In such circumstances, you can try shaving them off with a sharp razor.
Now for most women, shaving facial hair is something unthinkable but believe me, it does not affect your hair texture or make it grow any thicker or denser.
When you are undergoing laser treatment, the dermatologist highly recommends that you shave your hair in between the sessions and not take recourse to any other form of hair removal.
Shaving does not disturb the hair roots and as such does not interfere with your laser treatment process.
Now my mother happened to watch a TV programme, where a practitioner of folk medicine was talking about a DIY oil to reduce facial hair growth. She noted it down and prepared this oil, quite unsure of its efficacy.

Homemade Oil to Reduce Facial Hair Growth
Ingredients Required:
- Coconut Oil - 4 tsp (You can use Parachute coconut oil or organic coconut oil)
- Eucalyptus Oil (Nilgiri Oil) - 4 tsp (You can also buy it from Amazon)
- Coconut shell pieces - 2 heaped teaspoons
- Garlic Pods - 12
Procedure:
Place a pan on a low flame and add the coconut oil first. Then add coconut shell pieces and garlic pods and after sometime add the eucalyptus oil.Be careful with the eucalyptus oil, though. It's boiling point is very less and if you heat it beyond that temp., the whole mixture may catch fire.
When the garlic pods turn brown, remove from fire. Store it in a container without straining.
It can be preserved for up to 2 months. Do not refrigerate. If you want to prepare more of this oil, increase the quantity of the ingredients accordingly.
Method of Application
Take a little of this oil in a spoon and apply it on freshly tweezed skin and let it stay for an hour or two. Do this after you take your bath. Then apply it once more - an hour or two before you go to sleep. My mother used it regularly without fail for a month and to her surprise found that this simple oil was quite effective. She found that she had to tweeze less and less hairs as days passed by. However, when she couldn't use this oil for a week or so due to some reason, she found that the hair grew back.
So you have to keep on using this oil regularly if you want to slow down your facial hair growth. You can also use it for your upper lips and sideburns, but only after tweezing those unwanted fuzzies.
Now this isn't some magic potion that will completely eliminate unwanted hair nor do I claim that it is as effective as Vaniqa as my mother has never used it. However it's a great way to keep your facial hair in check without any side-effects.
Try it and see if it works for you. I'm not sure how it works on girls/women with a lot of facial hair but for a few stray hairs on the chin it does work well! At least for my mom it worked!
Plucking facial hair is inexpensive, but time consuming. It can also be painful and lead to ingrown hairs if the hair breaks off underneath the skin. You can avoid ingrown hairs by pulling the hair gently as opposed to yanking it out with the tweezers.
